Absolutely London reviews Christmas at Bingham Riverhouse, the festive lunch for foodies in a picturesque location

By Isabella Eckett

It’s clear why Bingham Riverhouse is known to many as the Ritz of Richmond. Nestled on the banks of the Thames, Bingham Riverhouse and has an air of sophistication like no other. It’s especially magical at Christmas time; the landscaped garden sparkles with fairy lights making it the perfect setting for a festive gathering with your nearest and dearest.

After recent renovations, the hotel is effortlessly chic. Enter into The Library restaurant and you’re met with teal leather benches, wicker chairs and french grey panelled walls. A vast collection of classic Penguin books line the shelves, adding to the cosy and laid back vibe. Long standing, friendly staff wear aprons over chinos, trainers on foot, going out of their way to make you feel immediately welcome. At home, even.

We take our seats, and the centre piece is a delightful mini Christmas tree. Positioned by the window, we look out onto the beautiful terrace, beyond which the river glistens with boats gently drifting by. Presented with the festive menu, the courses are exciting – and no turkey to be seen. Far from conventional, seasonal delights such as guinea fowl, monkfish bourguignon and stone bass are on offer.

With our aperitif, squishy warm bread served on a rustic grey slate with whipped paprika and smoked garlic butter kicks things off. I opt for a rich mushroom veloute served on a bed of confit potatoes with crunchy black truffle croutons to start. Main courses are served on chalky white mix-matched pottery, tender venison with al dente parsnips, creamy dauphinoise finished with a dark, rich jus. It’s an exceptional fine dining experience, without the stuffy atmosphere.

Pudding presents a surprise, delicate chocolate mousse with a centre of gooey marshmallow, the combination does not disappoint – the flavours are mouth wateringly delicious. And no Christmas lunch would be complete without a little sweet treat for afters, Baileys fudge on a bed of cocoa, a wonderful finish to a contemporary festive feast.
