This pretty suburb in north London is a favourite with families with a bustling Broadway of independent shops and cafes, and plenty of leafy parks nearby from Highgate woods to Alexandra Palace. But where are the best places to go out for a meal? We share our favourites.
La Lluna
Catalan tapas restaurant La Lluna is popular with Muswell Hill locals, serving delicious small plates and sharing dishes alongside an extensive gin cocktail list. Dishes include various meat, fish and vegetarian tapas as well as charcuterie, like jamón and chorizo ibérico, plates of padron peppers and pan con tomate. Showcasing fresh Spanish flavours in a cosy and vibrant atmosphere, La Lluna is one of Muswell Hill’s best dining options.

Table Du Marché
This fine French restaurant on East Finchley High Road serves classic, rich cooking with first-class service to match. The chef changes the Table Du Marché menu on a daily basis, but sample evening dishes are French onion soup, moules marinière, braised leg of rabbit and wild mushroom risotto. Visitors can also perch at the bar of the intimate, dimly-lit dining room and enjoy a cocktail or two.

Chriskitch
Family-run café Chriskitch serves vibrant, fresh and nutritious salads from orange and beetroot to aubergine, yoghurt and pomegranate. You’ll be hard-pushed to find a seat in the little eatery at prime time, but it’s worth a visit, and there’s a lovely sun-trap of a garden too. Chriskitch also serve brunch dishes like baked eggs in yoghurt with raisin, pumpkin seeds, baby spinach and chilli and homemade granola with poached fruit.

Bob’s
All-day restaurant Bob’s is a casual, botanical-themed spot for brunch and service with a smile. Popular with families, dishes on the eclectic menu include buttermilk stacked pancakes, red shakshouka and Bob’s beef burger, plus a classic full English and vegetarian options aplenty.

Lyon’s Seafood and Wine Bar
The team behind Lyon’s in Crouch End is top class. Anthony Lyon, formerly of the Hix, Wolseley and Colbert, takes up front of house, while head chef Talia Prince boasts impressive experience at the likes of Le Gavroche and Fat Duck. With a focus on fresh, sustainable seafood (Lyon’s often serve the catch of the day) dishes on the menu include miso fish collar, fried cod cheeks and a selection of impressive vegetable dishes like grilled cabbage with beef fat and tangy capers.

Bistro Aix
Another Crouch End gem, Bistro Aix is a fine French dining restaurant with a romantic atmosphere and a rich menu that prides itself on using mostly organcic ingredients. Mains include wild duck mallard with orange sauce, roasted plums, and crispy pommes dauphines and, for vegetarians, chickpea panisse with parsnip purée and black olive tapenade.

Cocoro
Located near Highgate tube station, Cocoro is an authentic Japanese delicatessen and restaurant that looks unassuming, but serves killer ramen – hot, steaming bowls of tonkotsu with shreds of pork and either flour or rice noodles. They also serve sushi, gyoza and have special sushi party platters made to order for occasions.
