Every once in a while a designer comes along that makes the fashion industry sit up. Sid Neigum is the hot designer to know for 2017, so brush up on your facts and make sure to name drop this young designer before he hits the big time…
Sid Neigum made his London Fashion Week debut this year with an inventive, cohesive and, most importantly wearable, collection of geometric garments rendered in muted, autumnal hues. Holding back from the look-at-me, high drama aesthetic that so often befalls new designers, Neigum handled drapery, fabric and fit with dexterity and maturity. For AW16 the designer premised his collection on the golden ratio – 1 x 1.618 – offering just the right amount of trend-led details (hello cold-shoulders and statement sleeves) alongside an innovative use of rich wool and camel hair fabrics.
Based in Toronto, the young designer studied science at university for one year before enrolling in the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2009. He went on to rake in an array prizes, including the Toronto Fashion Incubator New Labels award, Mercedes-Benz StartUp competition, participation in the British Fashion Council’s Next in Line exhibition, and most recently was invited to apply for the prestigious annual ANDAM fashion award. Talk about a busy year.
Since appearing at London Fashion Week, the buzz surrounding the brand has gathered momentum. Officially labelled by Vogue as ‘a brand to watch’, Neigum’s iconic pieces have been popping up across social media, worn by a range of fashion influencers. For SS17 the designer has upped his game with a striking collection composed of a limited yet striking spectrum of black, white, red, and a light touch of gold. From an innovative take on the classic white shirt and a beautifully draped lazer cut black peplum dress, to a fire engine red cold-shoulder blouse, this collection delivers hero piece after hero piece, and we want it all.
