The perfect night’s sleep is the holy grail of life. The quality of our sleep defines our day – and a good night will always lead to happier, more productive and successful waking hours. But how to achieve it? When designing a bedroom, there are lots of factors to consider – lighting, temperature, colours. But most important is, of course, the bed itself.

Swedish bed company Carpe Diem was founded 25 year ago by chiropractor Börje Thuleskär, a firm believer in the importance of sleep for body and mind. He sought out the best mattress on the market, but wasn’t impressed by it and one day fell asleep on a bed of heather by the sea in Sweden – where he realised that nature contoured to his body far more than any bed ever had. This led him to embark on a quest to build the perfect bed, one that would mimic the feeling of weightlessness he had had on the heather.

The quest took thousands of hours and a partnership with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. The final result is Carpe Diem’s patented Contour Pocket System, which has a unique cushioning ability. It gently yields and supports at the same time, instantly moulding to your body’s contours and changing with your every movement. You can feel the mattress embrace your hips and shoulders while gently supporting your lumbar and waist. Your spine is relieved of tension, and your muscles can finally relax. Just like lying on a bed of heather on the cliffs by the Swedish sea.Carpe Diem Beds burst onto the London market two years ago, opening a showroom in Wigmore Street. The entire range is on show and people are encouraged to come and try out the beds. It has been hugely popular among design-conscious Londoners and a smaller edit is going on display at Harrods too in April. The focus is on customising beds to meet your exact needs, both physical and aesthetic. With an array of legs, headboards, fabrics and functions, these beds are designed to be as beautiful to look at as they are to sleep in. Carpe Diem Beds offers a full bedroom design experience so that you can create your individual sanctuary where you can unwind. As beautiful as they are innovative, these beds are handmade-to-order and are fully customisable to your needs. From beautiful nature—inspired fabrics from the Designers Guild and the Romo Group to an array of bed linen, bedroom accessories, and furniture, Carpe Diem Beds will help you design the bedroom of your dreams.

Influencer Melanie Lissack is a fan of the design service. She has been sleeping in a Komo bed for two months and says: “Getting into the bed for the first time, my body responded and I felt comfort instantly – I felt supported and I quickly unwound from the day. My back and my legs felt aligned and level, and I now sleep a lot deeper than I did before.” She configured the bed to create a contemporary look in her home by choosing each component individually: “I was drawn to the quality of the Designer’s Guild Zaragoza Eggshell in an off-white beige and surprised myself by picking this neutral. However, as someone who changes the decor of a room as much as I change my socks, this light shade had an ageless quality that would work with any decor transitions. To add colour, Carpe Diem Beds made me some huge headboard cover pillows in Romo’s Asuri Mulberry and a throw pillow in DG Zaragoza Pebble. I selected single Lod Bed Legs in black to match the off-white fabric to create a modern, monochrome scheme; the slender design of the Lod Legs felt more weightless and balanced out the dominance of the headboard.”Once you try a night in a Carpe Diem Bed, no other bed will do. Visit the new showroom to experience the brand for yourself and design your perfect bed, and try the online configurator to see all the available options.
