Mayfair’s salon to watch, Hiro Miyoshi Hair and Beauty excels in both style and substance

Words Catherine Hales

Walking into Hiro Miyoshi Hair and Beauty, a feeling of serenity washes over me and the stress of Green Park station and the drizzle and my lack of umbrella all fall away. The interiors are chic and calming, with white walls and glossy wooden surfaces, as well as a Japanese-inspired screen making the most of the space. I am there for a style refresh – not a drastic chop or colour change but rather something a little more defined to really embrace autumn and say goodbye to the more relaxed summer look.

I am greeted by Hiro himself

I am greeted by Hiro himself who is going to be administering my cut. He is friendly but efficient, assessing my hair with a practised eye. He asks me what I’m looking for and I tell him that my main concern is my half grown out fringe which looks entirely accidental and has been the bane of my morning routine for months. Hiro is unfazed, however and suggests a trim to get rid of my split ends and to incorporate my fringe. He also lights on one of my hair’s other problem areas; although not thin, there isn’t much of it. To combat this, Hiro suggests a cut that is slightly shorter at the back that will bring more volume to the front. I agree and its off to the shampooing station. After a relaxing shampoo, I am whisked back to my seat where I am offered refreshments and reading materials galore. As I sip on my sparkling water, copy of Harpers in hand, Hiro gets to work. Although I enjoy a chinwag as much as the next person, I sometimes find the obligatory chat that seems to come with haircuts daunting. Luckily Hiro keeps it short and sweet, much like my hair which transforms from a shapeless mess into a beautifully shaped bob. He uses a curling iron to create soft waves that I instantly fall in love with.

Hiro’s skill is undeniable and I soon have an admiring crowd praising my new ‘do but honourable mention must go to his speed. Hiro understands that his customers do not have hours to spend hanging around the salon; I am in and out in under forty five minutes with a fabulous hair cut that looks high end while being low maintenance. Its still raining when I leave but so wonderful is the service at Hiro Miyoshi Hair and Beauty, they even give me an umbrella to protect my tresses.
