Japanese cuisine has long been a gastronomic trend tickling London tastebuds and one we feel fairly confident with. Sushi is fast-becoming a diet staple and Sake bars are popping up city-wide. Proud East are going one step further this spring and bringing Japanese culture in its entirety to the bank of Regent’s Canal. The popular East London venue is inviting visitors to embrace the contemporary sounds, tastes and vibrant street-life of Japan in their twelve-week pop-up. Venture down the blossom-lined paths of Regent’s Canal to experience a fusion of Tokyo’s dynamic cultural hub with century old customs.

EAT

Combining culinary traditions with the modern theatre of street food vendors, Proud East’s open plan kitchen will be taken over by renowned London restaurants, Tonkotsu. On offer will be a tantalising menu of fresh gyoza, Crab Korokke, Chicken Kara-age and Tonkotsu’s signature Ramen. If these gourmet dishes leave you wanting more, leading UK Japanese cooking school – Sozai Cooking School – are inviting guests to cook up a sushi storm in a series of hands-on workshops.

DRINK

There is also the opportunity to experiment with London’s latest trend in alcohol – Sake. Visitors can discover the exotic world of the Japan’s national drink in a cocktail workshop with Tonkotsu.

DO

With Sake cocktail in one hand and gyoza in the other, guests will enjoy an evening of unrivalled entertainment. The venue emulates the neon-lit streetscapes of Toyko’s enthralling and eclectic nightlife. An adventurous line-up of Japanese artists, DJ’s, singers and comedians provides the entertainment. But it’s not all after-hours. Visitors can discover the benefits and spiritual practice of century old tearooms. Create your own blend of Matcha, or learn the traditional craft of Origami in a workshop led by independent Japanese tutors. A special family package affords origami classes for children with delicious coffee and cakes for the parents. For a taste of one of the world’s oldest film industries, Nomad Cinema will transform Proud East’s beautiful riverside terrace into an outdoor cinema. Expect to see an eclectic array of iconic Japanese films titles suitable for everyone. All ticket sales donated to ‘Save the Children Japan’.

When you’ve finally had too much Tokyo for the night, take an essence of Japan home. Proud East’s canal side pop-up market showcases Japanese fashion, homeware and crafts. Connect with traditional culture, sample new, fresh flavours and experience a neon-lit night to remember. Proud has a corner of vibrant Japan to enthral every visitor.

Pop Up Japan is open throughout May, Monday – Friday 12:00-22:30, Saturdays 10:00-22:30 and Sundays 10:00-21:45.
