DRY HAIR SAVIOURS

DON’T OVER-WASH

Shampooing your hair washes away dirt, however it also strips away natural oils causing it to dry out. Try cutting down washes to just twice a week (if you can bear it!) and use dry shampoo to keep things fresh on in-between days.

USE A WEEKLY CONDITIONING MASK

Applying a deep conditioner to your hair once a week will keep it nourished and healthy. Naturally curly hair should opt for oil-based conditioners and moisturisers to counteract brittleness, while finer hair should stick to lighter formulas (applied just to the lengths) to avoid weighing down the strands.

WRAP IN A SILK SCARF

A quick and easy way to protect your hair from the elements is to wrap your tresses in a silk scarf before putting on a woolly hat. This will help prevent friction damage and cut down on static.

AIR DRY YOUR HAIR

Forgo your usual styling routine this winter and experiment with air drying – the easiest way to give tired locks a boost. Just make sure you don’t go outside with it still wet as this will make the hair freeze and break (and also make you ill!)

USE A HUMIDIFIER

Cold air and central heating are prime culprits when it comes to dry hair. Humidifiers offer a solution to this problem by adding moisture into the air, which will offer a respite for weather-ravaged hair and skin.

OPT FOR A DARKER HUE

Platinum dye has seen a surge in popularity, but sadly the chemicals used to bleach the hair are incredibly damaging and a sure-fire way to turn it into straw. Use winter as an excuse to experiment with more natural, darker shades (think post-breakup Carrie in the SATC film). Sophisticated and hair-friendly – win-win.
