Much to our delight, Shrove Tuesday has crepe’d up again. This year, festivities fall on the 28th and bring a wealth of flipping good pancake menus. There are dishes to satiate both savoury and sweet teeth, as well as an array of unique ingredients and flavours. Here’s our roundup of where to eat pancakes in London.
A taste of the Black Forest at German Gymnasium
German Gymnasium are shaking things up this Shrove Tuesday and serving guests a bountiful Bavarian version of the classic crepe. Gorge on a Black Forest and Chocolate pancake (or in German) Schwarzwälder Kirsch Pfannkuche for in indulgently, decadent way to end February.
Holy Crêpe! at New Street Grill
Chef Lawrence Keogh at New Street Grill is ditching the banana and chocolate classic combos and diving in with something infinitely more decadent. If a Sweetcorn with Foie Gras and Port reduction pancake won’t make you feel fulfilled this February, we’re not sure what will.
Under the Sea at Fish Market
Feast on the finest seafood pancakes this Shrove Tuesday at Fish Market. With flavour combinations like Iced Grapes and Butter Sauce these peculiar pancakes are a seafood sensation and not to be missed.
Nordic Luxury at Aster
Even Shrove Tuesday can’t evade the Scandi style that is sweeping the nation. London’s hottest new Nordic restaurant, Aster, will be offering a perfect Nordic Potato Pancake, made with the finest quality ingredients and served with a hen’s egg, fresh mushrooms and a rich Béarnaise sauce.
A Tropical Touch at Avenue
American inspired restaurant, Avenue in St James are taking it to tropical extremes this Shrove Tuesday. On the menu; devilishly delicious banana pancakes with salted caramel ice cream and a chocolate fudge sauce, or a zesty passion fruit crêpe soufflé with vanilla sauce.
Decadent Creations at Christopher’s
This year, Christopher’s are going bigger, better and bluer than any Shrove Tuesday past. Two headline pancakes are on offer; one savoury, one sweet and both wildly decadent. Choose between grilled lobster on blue corn pancake or a Nutella pancake stack to serve four. Or, if you think you can do better yourself, design your very own bespoke pancakes using Christopher’s famous ‘Build Your Own Pancakes’ menu and take your pick from a selection that includes maple-cured bacon, salted caramel ice cream, mixed berries, matcha green tea, cinnamon and coconut yoghurt.
Stack them High at The Blues Kitchen
The Blues Kitchen knows that one pancake is never enough so the sweet treats will be piling up in both the Camden and Shoreditch branches. Choose from a short or tall stack of Buttermilk pancakes, topped with Blueberries and Cream, or the classic Maple & Bacon combo.
Pillow-Soft at Riding House Cafe
Riding House Cafe has earned its stripes as one of London’s best-loved brunch spots, and for good reason. Their Buttermilk Pancakes are light-as-air and best devoured with berry compote and clotted cream.
Chocoholic’s Dream at Greenwood
Newly opened Greenwood is getting into the Shrove Tuesday spirit with a stack of American-style pancakes that will satiate even the sweetest of teeth. These bad boys are adorned with gooey chocolate chip cookies, cookie dough ice cream, chocolate sauce, peanuts and honeycomb. An all-round winner if you ask us.
Grown-Up Stacks at Ormer
For one of London’s most luxurious Shrove Tuesday stacks head to Ormer Mayfair. Their grown-up layered dessert has been created by renowned chef Shaun Rankin with chocolate praline spread, cream cheese, puffed wild rice, vanilla Jersey Chantilly cream, raspberries and vanilla rum sauce.
Sweet and Savoury at Darwin & Wallace
Bar and restaurant group Darwin & Wallace work with a number of beautiful independent neighbourhood bars across London and have a tantalising selection of Shrove Tuesday specials. Head to No 1 Duke Street, No 11 Pimlico Road, No 32 The OldTown or No 197 Chiswick Fire Station for pancake menus that will satisfy both sweet and savoury aficionados. On offer is a smoked salmon stack with crushed avocado and dill; a delightfully indulgent dish with banana and butterscotch; or a warm and fluffy pile of blueberry ricotta pancakes with crème fraiche and maple syrup.
Dosa Pancakes at Indi-Go
On offer at Indi-Go, Boxpark Croydon is India’s most loved street food. Try plain or with masala potatoes; either way this dish will satisfy for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They’re also gluten free and suitable for vegan customers.
