Embrace the utilitarian appeal of the khaki trouser – this season’s answer to failsafe denim
Words Joy Montgomery
It’s official: the fashion industry has gone mad for khaki. Leading on from last season’s penchant for all things military, pieces such as the army shacket have led the charge for 2017. The result is something altogether more utilitarian – lines are cleaner and embellishment forgone.
Brands including Joseph and Celine have embraced the look, proving that Gucci’s maximalism isn’t the only style on the scene. Minimalism has continued to simmer below the surface and we’re secretly quite happy about it…
Khaki trousers are the latest iteration of the mossy-coloured trend and are set to be your answer to denim this summer. They may summon memories of ’90s combats, yet in the hands of bloggers, such as Alex Stedman and Lucy Williams, they become chic. Plus, with both high street and high-end offering interpretations on the trend, there’s a look for every budget.
This season khaki trousers come in a range of styles. Everything from crisp tailoring and chino fabrics to wide leg culotte cuts. Worried about retro connotations? Culottes are a good way to go. Their silhouette feels contemporary and they’re also the most figure-flattering. Keep the waistline just above the hips and opt for hemlines that finish just above the ankle. Tailored styles are also great for those wanting to make less of a statement – simply roll up to show off your summer sliders.
When styling, treat them as you would a pair of jeans. If chosen correctly khaki trousers should become a versatile staple in your wardrobe. Be inspired by the bloggers and pair yours with a white tee, biker jacket and block-heeled loafers. Alternatively, try off-setting the utilitarianism with a pretty Victoriana blouse à la Lucy Williams.
