Take part in Independent Bookshop Week with a packed campaign of events, fun and frivolity right across London
Words Helen Brown
For many people, bookshops conjure fond images. Of book readings and signings, or in-store cosy cafes. They provide delight in discovering new authors and titles. But with the rise in kindles and eBooks, the independent bookshop might well be a thing of the past. Independent Bookshop Week falls between 24th June and 1st July this year.
It’s part of the Books Are My Bag campaign and celebrates independent bookshops in the UK and Ireland. It’s a collaboration between publishers, bookshops and authors to promote our lovely bookshops. They do this with events, reading groups and storytelling across the country. As well as author signings, literary lunches and face painting.
Altogether around 400 indies are taking part in IBW, now in its 11th year. Here you will find a definitive map of those taking part. Your local bookshop will have its own way of celebrating. We encourage you to visit and join in with them so that they do not fall to the threat of the eBook.
