How to extend your living space with an Orangery or Garden Room

Over the past year or so, most of us have experienced some form of pressure with our living spaces, whether this is as a result of home working, home schooling or a combination of both and many other factors.

Alongside all of us spending more time physically in our homes, this has created a trend which shows no sign of slowing down at present: the race for space at home.

Rather than bolting on a solid extension, many discerning home owners are now choosing to extend by adding a glazed extension such as an orangery or garden room. These luxurious structures can add both important space, value and, if choosing the right supplier, can be designed to suit almost any style property.

An orangery or garden room will bring the outdoors closer to the indoors and flood your home with natural light – both of which have proven benefits for our health and well-being.

By choosing to work with a bespoke designer, such as market leader David Salisbury, there are a number of key considerations that an experienced designer will need to take into account. These include:

  • Budget
  • Lifestyle
  • How is the new orangery or garden room going to be used?
  • The furniture you intend to incorporate
  • The architecture of the existing home (which will be a key influence on the final design)

Whilst budget and lifestyle will obviously be entirely individual, there are a number of common types of functionality that an orangery or garden room can provide. Here are a few of the most in-demand design briefs:

Kitchen Extension

Whilst our kitchens have always been the hub of our homes, they have assumed even more importance as we have spent more time at home. An orangery, with its solid perimeter flat roof, is the ideal solution to create a larger footprint for a bigger kitchen space.

Multi-Functional Living Space

A ‘multi-functional living space’ might not be the catchiest term but it neatly encapsulates what an open plan orangery or garden room can deliver. From providing space for a desk to work during the day, to an area to relax during the evening or weekends, these spaces are designed for both practicality and enjoyment in mind.

Dining Room

Having the opportunity to dine together as a family more frequently since the pandemic, has made investing in your dining space a more popular decision. Enjoy dining with your family and taking in the views of your garden at the same time, what’s not to like?

Living Room

Perhaps you just want to curl up with a newspaper or a good book on your favourite sofa?  Or settle down with a nice cup of coffee.  Either way, modern orangeries and garden rooms are designed to be enjoyed all year round.

Home Office

Finding a dedicated space to work from home has been a necessity for many of us but getting the right environment to ensure you’re working productively is essential. With abundant natural light provided by the generous glazing typical of an orangery or garden room, these spaces are both inspiring and effective for home working.
