A healthy scalp is the key to luscious locks. We found nine of the best detoxing products to try today

Words Joy Montgomery

We all know that regular trims and conditioning are important for maintaining beautiful hair. But did you know that having a healthy scalp is also an essential part of growing luscious locks?

There are many factors that can affect your scalp’s health. Whether it’s hormones, diet, product build-up or environmental factors. The result is dandruff, oiliness and an itchy, irritated scalp. This can then cause hair follicles to become drier and less manageable. “Psoriasis is often a cause of dry scalp issues and is generally down to stress.” Explains Johanne Herald, Master Stylist at Charles Worthington Percy Street. “In these circumstances I would recommend a good massage to detox the skin followed by a scalp detox shampoo. Make sure it is hypoallergenic with ingredients such as eucalyptus and peppermint.”

The first step to a happy scalp is a correct diagnosis, and a trained hairdresser is the best person to do this. “Charles Worthington Salon offer free, 15 minute appointments using a scalp and hair camera that magnifies the hair and scalp by 800x.” Joanne continues. “We always start with the scalp, and then work our way down the cuticle checking where hair is sensitised and porous. These factors affect how well the hair holds a style and fresh colour. The better you look after the condition the better it behaves.”

Salons can also offer in-house treatments using products, such as The Kérastase Spécifique range, to give you a starting point. You can then build on these by implementing good practices at home with scalp-friendly products.

Whether you want to grow your hair or simply banish white flakes, there are plenty of at-home detox options. Scroll down to discover nine of the best.
