How to Nail the Grey Hair Trend

Once avoided at all costs, grey hair is the trend du jour with everyone from model Kristen McMenamy to British Vogue’s Sarah Harris donning silvery locks. Stylist and barber, Anthony Laban shares his tips for nailing the look.

Words Anthony Laban

Grey hair, whether natural or created with products has become a trend over the last few seasons and we are seeing more and more people choosing to let their natural grey show through. People who have been very dark in their youth tend to go a wonderful, true silver and this is the absolute ‘grey’, while lighter browns and reds tend to fade. If you decide to go grey remember, your hair needs maintenance – as it can look dull and the texture can be coarse, so always choose a gentle shampoo and conditioner that promote moisture and shine, use a leave-in conditioner and use a shine product to finish.

As your hair loses its natural tones, you will find you can often wear colours that previously didn’t suit you. However, that’s not to say you should ignore your skin tone, eye colour and complexion as all are important in choosing the right colour tones for your hair (and your clothes and makeup.) Your tones fall into cool and warm and while cool tones work with ash, for warmer tones, gold colouring is more flattering. But, if your roots are so grey, and that colour is dominating you for weeks between salon visits, maybe it is time to reconnect with the natural you. Do remember, a mane of silver or salt and pepper hair can be elegant and stunning on any woman, and can often be more flattering and even less ageing than hair that has been coloured too dark or too warm –which can be truly ageing!

So if your roots are coming through too quickly for you to manage, and time and money are not on your side, think about ditching the dye! And that’s where we can help! If you feel you want to go more natural, we can help you choose how to do it with a personal consultation that will help you decide on how to manage your colour, style and hair care regime.

But first…

Grow it out

Try and let the grey grow out a 1/2 to 1 inch before your consultation. Use root touchup stick to blur the roots.

Cut it out

Let us find you a new style for your new colour. Grey doesn’t mean becoming frumpy

Lighten up

Lightening the hair through the coloured hair with highlights will provide dimension and help create a gradual softening to the grey.

Stay glossy

Grey hair has a different texture and is often coarse or fragile, so use moisture rich shampoo and conditioner.About Anthony Laban
