How to Dress Up Your Knitwear for Spring 2017

Make your warm wardrobe staples work their hardest with our guide to dressing up your knitwear

Words Joy Montgomery

Sometimes it can feel like winter will never end. Especially when March comes around and we’re still wearing the same knitwear-coat combo we threw on in September…

When style inspiration dries up it can be tempting to simply bury our heads in the sartorial sand and refuse to resurface till spring. However, we still believe in the creative potential of the winter months (you’ll be daydreaming of luxe layers and cosy cashmere come August – we promise). Sometimes all your winter knitwear needs is a little elevation and what better way to do this than injecting a little new season flair?

We’ve found four chic street stylers who have used SS17 trends to shake-up their knitwear. Whether it’s the anarchic edge of patent leather or the elegance of ankle-grazing culottes, it’s easier than you think to inject new life into an old faithful.

ADD SHIMMER WITH SEQUINS

There’s nothing more satisfying than juxtaposing the iridescent shine of metallics with the textural warmth of wool. A sequin skirt will add some serious glamour to a grey cashmere knit, especially when worn over the knee. If sequins are a little intimidating then a metallic pleated midi will do the job just as well.

LAYER UNDER A FLORAL MINI

Floral dresses were big news for AW16 and they’re officially sticking around for spring/summer. This look is particularly good for when you’re bored of wearing the same jumper every day. Layering your knit under your favourite floral dress will keep you warm whilst allowing your usually hidden layers to shine.

PAIR WITH CULOTTES

Culottes are on their way to becoming one of our favourite new wardrobe staples. They offer the same smart finish as a pair of classically tailored trousers but with added fashion-forward flair. It may sound strange, but their volumous silhouette is perfectly complemented by an oversized knit, especially when paired with pointed courts or ankle boots.

GO BOLD WITH PATENT

We know you’ve been avoiding it, but it’s time to face the fact that patent is here to stay (for now anyway). It has slowly crept into the mainstream and was spotted in abundance on the FROW at London Fashion Week. Just think of it as 2017’s answer to the leather trouser. Like sequins, this anarchic fabric has the ability to add an edge to cosy fabrics. We love this street stylers pairing of chunky cable knit with a buckled patent mini. Sexy yet chic.
