It is easy to be overwhelmed by life. But what if we told you a bit of reorganising could help you find some serenity? Aline Lau, UK-based KonMari consultant and founder of decluttering service Tokimekie, has shared her tips on how to create a tidy environment that can transform your lifestyle at home and on the go.

FINISH TIDYING BEFORE CONSIDERING STORAGE

Often, individuals believe that they will resolve their clutter by purchasing a new storage solution. They do not consider whether or not they even want or need the belongings that they are keeping. Tidy by category first, addressing clothes, books, papers, bits and bobs, and sentimental items in that order. Remove all of your belongings from where they are stored. Then, individually hold each belonging as you ask yourself, “Do I truly need this?” or “Does it spark joy for me?”. After you have completely finished tidying, you can consider how you would like to store your belongings.

CONSOLIDATE THE AREAS WHERE SIMILAR ITEMS ARE STORED

Keep similar-type items together and minimise the areas where they are stored. For instance, you can consolidate the cleaning supplies in your home and keep them in one fixed place. This way, you will finish using one set of products before moving on to the next, and you will also be able to locate your belongings when you need them.

IF YOU’RE TRAVELLING, MAKE YOUR HOTEL ROOM FEEL LIKE HOME

Remove all of your belongings from your suitcase and arrange them beautifully. Hang your clothes in the closet, store folded clothes in the wardrobe, and neatly lay out toiletries on the bathroom counter. The key is to set everything up at once, prior to settling down.

ADD FLOWERS

Even a single flower will brighten your room and add a spark of joy. If you’re staying at a hotel, request a vase from the concierge and purchase some flowers from a nearby market or flower shop.

SPRAY YOUR FAVOURITE FRAGRANCE

To make yourself feel at home, you can use your favourite aroma from home or purchase one that sparks joy at your destination if you’re away

CHANGE INTO RELAXING LOUNGEWEAR

Away from home? Since you can’t guarantee finding comfortable loungewear at your destination, I suggest bringing your favourite set with you that sparks joy.

ARRANGE SMALL ITEMS ON A TRAY

Place smaller items such as accessories and glasses on a tray and not directly on a table surface. For peace of mind, you could always bring a foldable tray with you on your trip if you’re on holiday or travelling on business.Learn more of these transformational skills at The Art of Tidying. The workshop will be held at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall on the 7th of September. Tickets can be reserved via EventBrite.
