Butternut Box delivers bespoke packages of nutritionist-approved meals to your door for your pup to lap up in a state of satiated bliss. We caught up with the team behind the innovative brand to discover why these delicious and nutritious dinners are a must for happy dogs

Q: Tell us a bit about Butternut Box, where did it all start?

A: The story began five years ago when Dave, one of our founders, fell in love with a Staffie at Battersea Dogs Home. She was very poorly, but Dave convinced Battersea that his family were the best people to nurse her back to health. Unfortunately, things didn’t look good, and well… they didn’t smell good either, so they decided to call her Rudie.

In an attempt to improve Rudie’s tummy problems, Dave started home-cooking her meals using only the best ingredients, and the improvement was better than he could have imagined. Dave told the story to his friend and colleague Kev, our other founder, who suggested that they try cooking for even more dogs – and so the idea was born.Q: How does Butternut Box work?

A: Before we prepare our meals we ask you a few simple questions about your dog so that we can really get to know them.  We take into account the age, weight, breed, body condition and activity level of your dog to help us create a truly tailor-made meal plan. Every meal is taste-tested by us before it leaves our kitchen, then frozen and packaged in an insulated box to keep it fresh whilst it’s being shipped out to our lucky Butternutters. Meals are carefully portioned and packaged so that you know exactly how much you should be feeding your dog each day – simply serve and set your dog’s tail to wag.

Q: What’s the Butternut Box team like?

A: We’re a group of individuals from all over (although there is a strong Irish contingent) who are brought together by our passion for dogs. We love to go the extra mile – we know the name of all of our furry customers, and most of the human ones too, and nothing makes us happier than the pictures and success stories that we get sent every day.

Q: Give us an example of some of the ingredients you work with?

A: At the moment we have four tasty meal options; Turkey, Chicken, Lamb and Beef. All of our recipes contain 60% fresh human-grade meat along with a selection of vegetables and supplements to provide a nutritionally complete diet. We think that knowing where your ingredients come from is a big deal. Our beef and lamb is from Northern Ireland, our chicken is from Norfolk and our turkey is from Hertfordshire. We like to be close with everyone we work with, including our suppliers, so we know that the ingredients we use meet the standards that we, and you, expect. Q: What are some important aspects to keep in mind when choosing nutrition for your dog?

A: Three areas to focus on are quality, palatability and suitability. In terms of quality it’s important to understand the ingredients in the food and how it’s processed. There only needs to be 4% chicken in a tin of dog food for it to be classed as a chicken meal, so it’s best to check the label before you buy. In terms of palatability, freshly cooked is more accepted than other forms, and we have a few tricks up our sleeve to help out pet parents with fussy eaters. Lastly it has to be suitable for your dog’s individual needs, so as an absolute minimum we recommend a food that’s free from any known allergens including grain, dairy and soy.

Q: What’s next for Butternut Box?

A: Our dream is to see as many dogs as possible doing what we call ‘the happy dance’ when they receive their Butternut Box delivery. We are busy developing new recipes for our Butternutters, planning dog walks and maybe even adding some feline friends to the family…
