Absolutely explores Tiroler Hut- Notting Hill’s best kept secret.

Words Annie May Byrne-Noonan

Located on the fashionable Westbourne Grove best known for Farmacy and Granger & Co. The Tiroler Hut, often dubbed Tiroler Hut, is one of the areas best kept secrets. A restaurant, a nightclub and a bar, it has become a firm favourite amongst fun loving and in the know Notting Hillers. You enter Tiroler Hut via an unassuming street entrance. The narrow stairs take you down into a subterranean Austrian Ski Chalet. Complete with teaky wooden beams, gingham curtains and staff in lederhosen. The fact that Tiroler Hut is a family run business stops it feeling contrived. The founding grandfather is often seen having a Stein at the bar and is always up for a chat with the patrons.

THE FOOD

Offering classic Austrian fayre. The folks at Tiroler Hut are happy for you to pop in for a casual Stein, a snack, or a three course feast. Choose from plates of hearty appetizers including bratwurst and noodle dishes. Followed by proper dumpling soups and plates of goulash. Not only do they offer savoury dishes. Indulge your sweet tooth with apple strudel and chocolate fondue for a delicious conclusion.

Our table opts for a mixed sausage plate for a starter that was perfect for sharing. Followed by the stewed beef goulash all round. The beef was tender and the sauce rich. The side noodles were soft and great for soaking up the fragrant goulash stew.

DRINKS & NIGHTLIFE

By Dessert the karaoke booth comes to life. Tiroler Hut’s resident entertainer begins his set with some stellar keyboard skills. Singing in a fitting Austrian baritone he welcomes patrons to make song requests and join in.

At this point the food laden tables become loaded with two-pint steins and shots of schnapps. Non-drinkers after something sweet should try Almdudler. Dubbed Austria’s favourite sparkling Apple Juice.

This is when the group singing, dancing and mingling with other revellers begins. Catch everyone from hot young German bankers singing beer songs. To dedicated old locals having a drink.A favourite among celebrities from Kate Moss to the Camerons whose drunken snaps adorn the walls. No matter if you’re after a fun destination for a date or for pre-drinks, theres always a reason to go to Tiroler Hut. Visit it before the secret gets out….Starters from £5/Mains from £15
