She chats exclusively with Absolutely and tells us the ten most common mistakes we make with our skin, and how to improve our skincare regimes.
USING GRAINED SCRUBS ON THE SKIN
People over scrub their skin. This damages our skin’s barrier. Making the skin red and irritated, as well as breaking capillaries. Scrubbing and rubbing of the skin can stimulate more oil. Don’t overuse scrubs. Instead use a gentle chemical-based exfoliant (one that contains glycolic acid). Skip harsh granules and micro-breads. Avoid the skin near your eyes, plus the skin right around your nose
SLEEPING ON YOUR FACE
Sleep on your back. This stops creasing on your face and décolletage. Also ensure you change your pillowcase often.
WASHING IN HOT WATER
Hot water dries out your skin. So avoid hot baths and showers. This is a mistake most people make.
NOT MOISTURISING REGULARLY
Moisturise day and night. Even if you have oil prone skin it still requires hydration.
NOT WEARING SPF
We don’t wear SPF enough and we don’t use a high enough factor. All year round it is necessary to protect our skin. You should wear factor 15 at least everyday. This helps to protect your skin from UVA damage. We need to apply it every hour for the correct amount of protection.
USING MAKEUP REMOVER WIPES
Although convenient, face wipes strip our skin of natural oils. They cause the skin to produce excess oils. If you are going to use a cleansing wipe, use it as the first step of your cleanse to remove make-up and dirt. But the second cleanse needs to be a good one. One cleanse is not enough. Also don’t forgot cleansing along hairline and down your neck.
NOT REALISING THAT OUR LIFESTYLE AFFECTS OUR SKIN
Our skin is what we are born with and where we live for our entire lives. So what we do with it matters. There are many lifestyle factors that affect our skin’s health. To keep your skin healthy use skincare products that contain health-boosting ingredients. Protect your skin by cleaning it with care. You should keep your sugar intake down. Eat good fats and exercise well. Healthy exposure to sun, a good diet and keeping to a healthy weight are all factors that boost skin health.
NOT BUYING THE RIGHT SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Your skincare products must contain health boosting ingredients. Key ingredients for good skin health include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Peptides, and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients give skin its moisture and volume – so check these are in your skincare.
NOT KNOWING THAT EXCERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN
So many people don’t exercise enough. Exercise increases blood circulation around the body. This gives a brightening effect to the skin and helps clear toxins from the body. Exercise helps to ease stress which decreases the chance of acne outbreaks. Remember to cleanse your facial area after you exercise. This prevents the skin absorbing sweat when pores close.
USING SKINCARE PRODUCTS IN THE WRONG WAY
How you use your skincare products affects how your skin responds to the treatment. If used in the wrong way they can have a negative effect on your complexion. For example eye products should never go on the eyelid. And only a small amount the size of a grain of rice should go under the eyes. Masks are another product we should use more often. They keep our skin bright and fresh looking. They have two or three different types for different needs, brightening, clearing. soothing, hydrating and de-puffing
