Malvern Garden Buildings turned heads at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show when they provided all the houseplant-spiration with their award-winning Houseplant Studios. The luxury building company were delighted to be back again for another year. This time round, the Houseplant Studios were tucked away on The Plateau in the Ranelagh Gardens. Malvern Garden Buildings made their stunning studios home for six houseplant enthusiasts – giving them space to showcase their designs and help inspire visitors to create wonderful, plant-filled spaces of their own. In case you missed it, here’s a round-up of the show-stopping studios.
A ROOM TO DANCE
By The Planted House
A Room to Dance was designed by partners Antonia and Ian Adams, owners of The Planted House. They brought their beautifully delicate design to life in Malvern Garden Buildings’ Studio Apex. The team won a Gold medal for their design that featured a diverse selection of tropical and sub-tropical indoor plants, alongside a plethora of beautiful pots. Plants cascaded from the ceiling and climbed the walls with rattan woven throughout the space to create a dramatic aerial garden.
PLANET STUDIO

Where retro classics and the wonderful oddities of the houseplant world collide, Planet Studio was a nostalgic feast for the eyes for show visitors. It was the second year that Malvern Garden Buildings teamed up with stylist and curator James Whiting of @Plantsbythere and the second Gold medal for Whiting. Planet Studio was also awarded the accolade of Best Houseplant Studio. The design was inspired by the iconic Manhattan club Studio 54, alongside Whiting’s love of the Palm House at Kew Gardens and childhood memories of his 90s-bedroom. Whiting aimed to show visitors how easy it is to create a piece of city nightlife in any garden – and Planet Studio certainly did just that. Styled with hues of orange and red, complemented with an array of retro and more instagrammable houseplants, out-of-the ordinary mushrooms, ceramics, textiles and lighting; it truly did showcase a nostalgically funky disco feel.
THE GRASS IS GREENER WHERE YOU WATER IT
By The Plant Workshop
Working from home is still present in some of our lives; sometimes it’s a struggle to know how to create the right balance between productivity and down time. The Plant Workshop won Gold for their design, which was housed in Malvern Garden Buildings’ Flat Roof Studio. The Plant Workshop showed visitors how, irrespective of locality, space, or budget they can replicate their own sanctuary at home inspired by their design. Why not use indoor plants and their abundant benefits to curate your workspace the perfectly balanced way.
SOCIAL MEDIA VS REALITY
By The Aroid Attic x The Botanical Archive
Charlotte Durrant, owner of The Aroid Attic, teamed up with Mohammed Bhula, founder of The Botanical Archive, to bring their current, on-trend Social Media vs Reality design to life in Malvern Garden Buildings’ Flat Roof Studio.
The plant enthusiast designers were awarded Silver-Gilt for their relatable design, which demonstrated the picture-perfect desire people have for their social feeds with houseplants contrasted against a hidden, behind-the-scenes reality of horticulture at home.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Following on from their medal-winning success at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Edible Bus Stop returned with their design Botanical Rhapsody, showcased in Malvern’s Studio Pent building. This year, the team were awarded Silver-Gilt for their immersive studio, which used unique technology, known as bio-sonification, to translate the bio-rhythms of living organisms into sounds. Taking initial design inspiration from the Japanese practise of forest bathing, Shinrin Yoku, visitors were invited to feel a sense of calm and stress reduction whilst surrounded by the luscious planting inside and out. Who knew plants could create such soothing sounds!
THE PLANT CLINIC
By Happy Houseplants x The Plant Rescuer
Founders of Happy Houseplants Mark and Emily Lawlor teamed up with The Plant Rescuer, Sarah Gerrard-Jones, to create their Gold medal-winning design The Plant Clinic, in Malvern Garden Buildings’ Studio Pavilion. The Plant Clinic offered an interactive space for people to learn how to better care for their plants through education and encouragement. The studio featured treatment stations for indoor plants, which included a Juice Bar that provided plants with nutrients to aid photosynthesis, a Steam Room that was represented by a large terrarium created by Worcester Terrariums, and a Soil Bar, made of bespoke potting mixes, enabling visitors to get their hands dirty and learn the best way to pot their houseplants.
